Karachi – The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is considering financing a $2 billion upgrade of Karachi’s railway line to support the transport of copper and other minerals from the Reko Diq project in Balochistan.
According to initial discussions, the proposed upgrade aims to modernize the Karachi–Balochistan rail link, ensuring faster and more reliable transportation of raw materials to the port city for export. Officials noted that the project would also boost regional trade and logistics capacity.
The move comes as Pakistan seeks to maximize the economic potential of the multi-billion-dollar Reko Diq copper-gold project, which is expected to generate major export revenues in the coming years.
Formal negotiations are ongoing, and details of the financing structure are yet to be finalized.
