Australia has announced the expulsion of Iran’s ambassador following a series of antisemitic attacks allegedly linked to Tehran’s influence networks. The decision, confirmed by the Australian government on Saturday, marks one of the toughest diplomatic moves Canberra has taken against Iran in recent years.
Officials stated that Australia “will not tolerate foreign-backed hate crimes or intimidation of Jewish communities.” The move comes after intelligence agencies traced funding and propaganda efforts to Iranian-linked groups that have been accused of stoking antisemitism within the country.
Foreign Minister Penny Wong emphasized that while Australia remains open to diplomatic engagement, protecting national security and social harmony is the government’s top priority. “Iran’s ambassador has been asked to leave immediately,” she said, adding that further sanctions are under review.
The expulsion is expected to strain already fragile ties between the two countries, with Tehran likely to retaliate diplomatically.
