New York — Former US Open champion Daniil Medvedev erupted in a fiery on-court outburst during his first-round match against Benjamin Bonzi, putting the 2025 tournament in chaos and setting himself up for a hefty fine.
Flashpoint Incident
A photographer unexpectedly entered the court at match point, prompting chair umpire Greg Allensworth to reward Bonzi a first serve. Medvedev hit the roof, confronting the umpire with:
“Are you a man? Why are you shaking?… He gets paid by the match, not by the hour.”
He rallied the crowd with mocking gestures, delayed the game for nearly six minutes, and even smashed his racquet repeatedly after losing the match.
