Pakistan slams India for not sharing detailed data after deadly Punjab floods

🇵🇰 Pakistan Slams India Over Flood Data Sharing

Pakistan has criticized India for failing to share timely and detailed hydrological data after the release of large water flows into the Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab rivers, which triggered deadly flooding in Punjab.

🔹 FO Statement:

  • The Foreign Office said India had only shared basic notifications via its High Commission in Islamabad.

  • Pakistan accused New Delhi of avoiding treaty protocols under the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), which requires data-sharing on water releases to prevent disasters.

  • Officials stressed that the lack of detailed upstream inflow and release data severely hampered Pakistan’s flood preparedness.

🔹 Flood Impact in Punjab:

  • Dozens of lives lost, thousands displaced.

  • Crops and livestock destroyed across Kasur, Bahawalnagar, Vehari, Okara, Lodhran, and Bahawalpur.

  • Pakistan Army and NDMA continue rescue and relief operations.

🔹 Diplomatic Angle:

  • Islamabad called India’s actions “irresponsible and contrary to humanitarian norms”, demanding that New Delhi fulfill its treaty obligations.

  • Pakistan is also considering raising the issue at international forums, including the World Bank (guarantor of the IWT).

⚠️ Why It Matters:
The criticism comes amid heightened tensions as riverine flooding worsens, with Pakistan accusing India of using water releases as a political tool instead of a coordinated humanitarian response.
