Election Result: On September 5, 2025, Thailand’s House of Representatives elected Anutin Charnvirakul—leader of the Bhumjaithai Party—as the new Prime Minister. He secured 311 votes, comfortably surpassing the 247 required majority.
End of an Era: Anutin’s win comes after the Constitutional Court removed Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra over ethics violations related to a leaked phone call. This move weakened the long-standing influence of the Shinawatra political dynasty.
Political Deal: His election was made possible through a strategic agreement with the People’s Party, the progressive parliamentary bloc. In return for their support, Anutin promised to dissolve Parliament within four months and consider constitutional reforms. However, the People’s Party will not participate in his government.
