Top auditor’s bad maths or a real trillion-rupee bombshell?

Islamabad – A fresh controversy has erupted after the Auditor General of Pakistan (AGP) flagged what it claims to be financial discrepancies amounting to nearly one trillion rupees in recent government accounts. The startling figure has sparked debate across political and economic circles, with some questioning whether this is a case of bad accounting or a genuine fiscal bombshell.

The audit findings, presented in a report to Parliament, highlight alleged irregularities in public spending, procurement, and debt servicing. While opposition parties seized on the report as proof of government mismanagement, finance ministry officials downplayed the claims, saying that much of the flagged amount relates to procedural gaps rather than outright corruption or losses.

Economic experts warn that if the figures hold true, Pakistan’s already fragile fiscal position could face serious credibility issues with lenders, including the IMF. However, others argue that audit reports often “inflate” discrepancies due to technicalities in documentation, later reconciled through clarifications.

The controversy has now set the stage for heated parliamentary debate, with pressure mounting on the government to either prove the auditor wrong or face questions over how such a massive figure went unnoticed.
