Rome – Italian prosecutors on Wednesday confirmed the arrest of a Ukrainian national suspected of involvement in the 2022 Nord Stream pipeline explosions that severely damaged gas links between Russia and Europe.

The suspect, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was detained in northern Italy following a European arrest warrant issued by German authorities. Prosecutors said the individual is accused of playing a role in the sabotage operation that targeted the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines in the Baltic Sea.

The blasts, which occurred in September 2022, disrupted a key energy supply route and escalated tensions amid the Russia-Ukraine war. Multiple countries have conducted investigations, though responsibility for the attack has remained disputed.

Italian officials said they are coordinating with German and EU authorities regarding the extradition process. The arrest marks a significant development in the international probe into one of Europe’s most controversial energy security incidents.
